TL;DR:

  • Pureology Hydrate is a sulphate-free, vegan, colour-protective range designed specifically for dry, colour-treated hair
  • The AntiFade Complex in every Hydrate product protects colour vibrancy alongside the deep hydration benefit
  • Key ingredients: jojoba oil (moisture), green tea extract (antioxidant protection), sage extract (follicle stimulation), AntiFade Complex (colour protection)
  • No protein in the Hydrate range — it's focused on moisture for hair that's dry but not structurally damaged
  • Available as shampoo, conditioner, weekly Superfood Treatment, and as bundles

Colour-treated hair has two problems to solve simultaneously: maintaining the moisture that colour services strip, and protecting the colour investment from fading. Pureology Hydrate is built around both. Here's how it works and who it's for.

01 — What Pureology Hydrate Is For

Pureology Hydrate addresses two things at once: deep hydration for dry hair and colour protection for treated hair. This combination makes it particularly suited to clients who colour their hair regularly and find that their hair becomes progressively drier between services. The AntiFade Complex in every Hydrate product protects colour pigment from washing out as quickly as it would with a non-specialist formula.

"Colour-treated hair is a specific category that general hydrating products don't fully address," says Debbie at the Waterfront. "They may hydrate well but let colour fade quickly. Or they protect colour but without meaningful moisture. Pureology Hydrate does both well. That's why it's one of our most consistently recommended ranges for colour clients."

02 — The Key Ingredients

Jojoba oil — similar in composition to the scalp's natural sebum. Smooths the hair cuticle, helps lock in moisture, and prevents dryness from progressing. Green tea extract — a rich antioxidant source that protects hair from environmental stress (UV, pollution) that contributes to both colour fading and dryness. Sage extract — stimulates follicles and supports scalp health. AntiFade Complex — Pureology's proprietary colour-locking technology present across the entire Hydrate range, which helps colour-treated hair hold its tone longer between appointments.

03 — The Products

04 — What Hydrate Doesn't Do

Pureology Hydrate is formulated for dry colour-treated hair that isn't structurally damaged. It has no protein content — which is intentional for hair that needs moisture without the weight or potential dryness that protein can add to already dry hair. If your colour-treated hair is also breaking, weak, or has been through significant bleach damage, pair Hydrate with a bond-building treatment like Olaplex No.3 for the repair component.

"The Hydrate range solves dryness and colour fade. It doesn't solve structural damage," says Royston at Cavendish. "For clients who have both concerns — which is common with regularly bleached or highlighted hair — we pair Hydrate with Olaplex No.3 weekly. The bond repair and the hydration work on different problems."

05 — Sulphate-Free, Vegan, Eco-Friendly

Pureology is 100% vegan and cruelty-free. The Hydrate range is sulphate-free — which matters significantly for colour longevity (sulphates accelerate colour fade and strip the moisture that colour services compromise). Packaging uses 95% post-consumer recycled materials.

06 — Bundle or Individual Products?

The Pureology Hydrate Trio (shampoo, conditioner, and Superfood Treatment) gives the full routine in one purchase. If you're new to the range and want to try before committing to the complete system, the individual shampoo and conditioner are the starting point. Add the Superfood Treatment as a weekly step once you've confirmed the range works for your hair.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Pureology Hydrate good for colour-treated hair?

Yes — it's specifically formulated for dry, colour-treated hair. The AntiFade Complex protects colour vibrancy while the sulphate-free formula maintains moisture without stripping the hair.

Does Pureology Hydrate have protein?

No. The Hydrate range focuses on moisture for dry hair, not structural repair. If your hair is also breaking or damaged, pair it with a bond-building treatment for the repair component.

How often should I use the Pureology Hydrate Superfood Treatment?

Once a week in place of conditioner. Five to ten minutes of contact time before rinsing. Used consistently, it maintains the moisture balance between colour services significantly better than conditioner alone.

Is Pureology safe for bleached hair?

Yes — the sulphate-free formula is gentle enough for bleached or lightened hair. For very damaged bleached hair, add a bond-building treatment to the routine alongside Hydrate.
