Grey hair is not a problem to be solved — it is a colour decision like any other, with three legitimate routes and a care routine that differs from pigmented hair in ways most advice skips. This is how our colourists actually talk clients through it in the chair.

Why hair goes grey — and why sometimes early.

Every hair follicle contains melanocytes — cells that inject pigment into the strand as it grows. With age, those cells slow down and eventually stop; the hair that grows through is transparent, and reads as grey or white against the rest. When that starts is overwhelmingly genetic: if your parents greyed in their twenties or thirties, that is the strongest predictor you will too.

Smoking, chronic stress, thyroid conditions and B12 deficiency are all associated with earlier greying — worth mentioning to a GP if greying arrives suddenly alongside other changes — but no shampoo, supplement or scalp treatment restarts melanocytes. Anyone selling grey “prevention” in a bottle is selling hope. What you can control completely is how grey hair looks and feels — which is the rest of this guide.

The three routes: embrace, blend or cover.

Embrace it. Deliberate silver is one of the strongest looks in the salon right now — but it works best maintained, not just left. Toning keeps it bright chrome rather than nicotine-yellow, and a sharp cut does more for grey hair than any product.

Blend it. Grey blending — fine highlights and lowlights woven through the natural grey — softens the contrast between grey and pigmented hair so regrowth never forms a hard line. It is the lowest-maintenance colour route: appointments stretch to eight or twelve weeks because there is no line to chase. This is the option most clients have not been offered, and the one our colourists recommend most.

Cover it. Full coverage gives the most uniform result and the strictest maintenance contract — a visible regrowth line every four to six weeks. Resistant greys are coarser and less porous than pigmented hair, which is why box dye so often slides off greys within weeks; salon formulation for resistant grey is a different product entirely.

Which route suits you depends on your grey percentage, your natural base and honestly how often you want to sit in a chair — exactly what a colour consultation at any of our 24 salons is for. The service side is covered in our Cape Town hair colour guide.

Caring for grey and silver hair.

Grey hair is not just unpigmented — the follicle also produces less sebum over time, so grey tends to run coarser, drier and more wiry. Three adjustments:

Tone the yellow out. UV, heat, mineral-heavy water and product build-up all push grey towards yellow. Violet-pigmented washes neutralise it — the same chemistry as blonde toning. Everything suitable lives in our Silver & Blonde Shampoo collection, with concentrated options in purple pigment and toning products. Use them once or twice a week, not every wash — our purple shampoo guide covers frequency. Milkshake Silver Shine is the gentlest system we stock for weekly silver maintenance.

Feed the texture. Treat grey as dry hair by default: conditioner every wash, a weekly mask, and a leave-in or light oil to soften the wire. Our dry hair mask guide applies directly.

Protect it from heat. Heat scorches unpigmented hair visibly yellow. Keep irons moderate and never skip heat protection.

If you colour your grey.

Covered grey is colour-treated hair and needs the full colour care routine — sulphate-free washing from the Colour Treated Hair collection, weekly masks, and bond building if you lighten. Frequent root retouches concentrate processing on the same regrowth band, so scalp-zone care matters more than for balayage clients.

FAQs.

What causes premature greying in your twenties or thirties?

Genetics, overwhelmingly — early greying runs in families. Smoking and certain deficiencies are associated with earlier onset, but if your parents greyed early, expect the same regardless of routine.

Can grey hair be reversed?

No. Once a follicle's melanocytes stop producing pigment, no cosmetic product restarts them. Rare cases linked to a medical cause — thyroid, B12 — can improve with treatment, which is a doctor conversation, not a haircare one.

Why is my hair breaking or shedding where I cover my greys?

Usually overlap — repeated colour applications over previously coloured lengths rather than regrowth only, which weakens the same hair again and again. A colourist applies to the regrowth band alone. If shedding is coming from the root rather than snapping along the length, that is a scalp or health question, not a dye technique one — worth a consultation either way.

What is the difference between grey blending and highlights?

Technique-wise they are cousins — blending uses fine highlights and lowlights specifically placed to diffuse the grey-to-pigment contrast, so regrowth arrives soft instead of striped. The goal is longer gaps between appointments, not brighter hair.

How do I stop grey hair looking yellow?

A violet toning wash once or twice a week, UV protection in summer, and a monthly clarifying wash if you use styling products or have hard water. If yellowing persists, a salon toner resets it in one visit.
