Bleached Hair

Bleaching strips the natural melanin pigment from the hair shaft using oxidative chemistry. The process opens the hair cuticle, weakens the disulfide bonds that hold the cortex together, and removes both colour and structural integrity. Bleached hair is more porous (absorbs water and product quickly), more fragile (breaks easily under tension), and more prone to brassiness as it loses its natural cool pigment. The level of damage depends on how high the lift went — going from black to platinum causes far more damage than highlighting brown hair caramel.

3. Weekly mask — alternate between a bond-building mask and a moisturising mask to balance protein and hydration.
4. Tone regularly — purple shampoo 1-2 times per week to keep tone fresh and brass-free.
5. Heat protect always — bleached hair is much more vulnerable to thermal damage. Use a heat protectant before every styling session and keep tools below 180°C where possible.
6. Trim every 6-8 weeks — bleached ends fray and split faster than virgin hair. Regular trims keep length looking healthy.

All bleached hair is colour-treated, but not all colour-treated hair is bleached. Colour treatment can be deposit-only (toner, semi-permanent) or single-process (no lightening). Bleaching is uniquely damaging because it lifts pigment by breaking down both colour and structural bonds. Can I use any shampoo on bleached hair? Avoid sulfate-based shampoos (SLS, SLES), clarifying shampoos (unless specifically detoxing build-up), and shampoos with high pH. Sulfate-free, mildly acidic, moisturising or strengthening formulas are ideal.

Why does my bleached hair feel gummy? Over-processed bleached hair can lose so much structural integrity that it feels gummy or stretchy when wet — a sign of severe protein loss. Use a protein-heavy bond builder like K18 or Olaplex No.0, followed by deep conditioning. Avoid further chemical processing until the hair regains strength. In extreme cases, a salon visit is necessary.
