TL;DR:

  • Five steps: gentler shampoo, conditioner every wash, weekly mask, leave-in, and oil on the ends
  • The mask is the biggest single upgrade — swap conditioner for it once a week
  • Seal with a leave-in and finishing oil after every wash — this maintains softness through the day
  • Protect from heat and sun — South Africa's UV is harsh on hair year-round
  • Most people see a real difference within two to three weeks of consistency

Fixing dry hair isn't complicated. It's about consistently putting moisture back in and protecting what's there. Here's the exact routine our Cape Town stylists use to bring dry, dull hair back to soft and shiny — and the habits that keep it that way.

Meet the experts:
Royston and Warren at Cavendish Square — Judy, head trainer — Lewis, owner — Jackie at Gardens Centre — Debbie and Nikí at V&A Waterfront — Danny and Charlene at Canal Walk — Lynette, Samantha and Dominique at Constantia Village

01 — Wash Less, and With a Gentler Shampoo

Two to three washes a week with a sulphate-free hydrating shampoo. Daily washing with a stripping formula is one of the fastest ways to dry hair out — it strips natural oils before they can do their job. Wash with lukewarm water, not hot.

"The frequency matters as much as the product," says Royston at Cavendish. "Clients who wash daily often think they need a richer shampoo. What they actually need is to wash less. Give the scalp's natural oils a chance to reach the lengths."

02 — Condition Every Wash — Two to Three Minutes Contact Time

Work a moisturising conditioner through the mid-lengths and ends after every shampoo. Leave it for two to three minutes — not thirty seconds — then rinse with cool water to seal the cuticle.

"The rinse temperature makes a difference," says Nikí at the Waterfront. "Hot water opens the cuticle and releases moisture. Cool water closes it and locks softness in. Thirty seconds of cool water at the end changes the result."

03 — Weekly Mask: The Biggest Single Upgrade

Once a week, swap your conditioner for a deep-conditioning mask. Leave it on for five to ten minutes. This is the step that makes the most difference to dry hair — it delivers intensive moisture that a rinse-out conditioner can't reach.

"If I could tell every dry-hair client one thing, it's this: mask weekly," says Jackie at Gardens Centre. "Not occasionally. Not when you remember. Every week. Consistently. That's what changes dry hair. Not the shampoo, not the oil. The mask."

04 — Seal With Leave-In and Oil After Every Wash

On damp hair after washing: apply a leave-in conditioner through the mid-lengths and ends to maintain softness throughout the day. Then a small amount of oil on the ends to seal moisture in and add shine.

"These two steps together — leave-in then oil — make hair feel significantly better between wash days," says Charlene at Canal Walk. "The leave-in does the conditioning work. The oil locks it in and gives you the polished finish. Both matter."

05 — Protect From Heat and South Africa's Sun

Heat protectant before every styling session without exception. Turn tool temperatures down — 150 to 180 degrees for fine hair, no higher than 200 for thicker hair. For sun protection, use a UV-protective leave-in spray or wear a hat on beach and outdoor days.

"Our sun is genuinely harsh on hair," says Lewis. "UV breaks down the cuticle and accelerates dryness. Clients who protect their hair from sun as well as heat — especially in summer — see significantly better results from the rest of their routine."

06 — Supporting Habits That Keep Hair Hydrated

  • Rinse chlorine and salt water out immediately after swimming
  • Sleep on a satin or silk pillowcase to reduce friction overnight
  • Trim split ends regularly — they travel up the shaft and make the routine less effective
  • If you have hard water, a chelating shampoo used monthly removes mineral buildup that blocks products from working

Frequently Asked Questions

How long does it take to fix dry hair?

You'll notice an immediate improvement after a mask and oil session. Lasting change takes two to four weeks of consistent routine. Very dry or damaged hair takes longer.

Can very dry or damaged hair be saved?

Moisture restores softness and shine significantly. Severely damaged ends usually need trimming. For very damaged hair, an in-salon reconstructing treatment alongside your home routine gives the best result.

How often should I use a mask for dry hair?

Once a week for most dry hair. Very dry, coarse or curly hair may benefit from twice a week. Fine dry hair should keep it to once — a rich mask too often can weigh fine hair down.

Does drinking water help dry hair?

General hydration supports overall hair health, but dry hair is mainly fixed from the outside. A consistent washing, conditioning and sealing routine does the work.

My hair is always dry after washing — why?

Usually the shampoo is too stripping, or the conditioner isn't being left on long enough. Try a sulphate-free shampoo, leave conditioner on for a full two to three minutes, and add a leave-in after washing.
