Dry Hair: The Complete Guide to Causes, Repair & the Best Products in South Africa

Dry Hair: The Complete Guide to Causes, Repair & the Best Products in South Africa

TL;DR:

  • Dry hair is a moisture problem — the hair isn't getting enough, or can't hold what it has
  • The most common causes: over-washing, harsh shampoos, heat styling without protection, South African sun, colour and hard water
  • A weekly mask is the single biggest upgrade for dry hair — more impactful than switching shampoo
  • Dry hair and dry scalp are different problems — the fix for one won't fully fix the other
  • Dry hair responds quickly to the right routine — most people notice a difference within two to three weeks

Dry hair feels rough, looks dull, tangles easily and breaks more than it should. Between South Africa's strong sun, coastal humidity, hard water and the heat tools most of us use daily, it's one of the most common concerns our stylists see. The good news: dry hair responds quickly to the right care.

01 — What Causes Dry Hair

Hair is naturally moisturised by sebum (scalp oil) and by moisture held inside each strand. Dry hair happens when that balance breaks down — either the hair isn't getting enough moisture, or its cuticle is too damaged to hold what it has.

"The most common causes we see in Cape Town specifically are heat styling without protection, washing too often with the wrong shampoo, and sun exposure," says Judy, head trainer. "Our climate is genuinely harsh on hair. The UV here is stronger than most people realise, and it damages the cuticle the same way it damages skin."

The main causes: over-washing with stripping sulphate shampoos — heat styling without protection — South African sun and UV — colour, bleach and chemical services — hard water mineral deposits — natural hair type (coarse and curly hair is naturally drier as scalp oils struggle to travel the length of the strand).

02 — Switch to Sulphate-Free and Wash Less

Sulphate shampoos strip natural oils from both scalp and lengths. For dry hair, this is counterproductive. Switch to a gentle hydrating shampoo and wash two to three times a week rather than daily. Let your scalp's natural oils do some of the conditioning work between washes.

"This one change alone makes a noticeable difference," says Warren at Cavendish. "Washing less frequently and with a gentler formula means the hair gets to hold its moisture longer. Most of the dryness clients think is just their hair type is actually over-washing."

03 — Condition Every Wash, Mask Every Week

Conditioner after every wash is non-negotiable. Work it through mid-lengths to ends and leave for two to three minutes before rinsing. Once a week, replace conditioner with a mask.

"The mask is where most people see the biggest change," says Jackie at Gardens Centre. "It's richer, stays on longer, and nourishes the hair at a level conditioner can't reach. Five to ten minutes once a week. That's the step that turns dry hair around."

04 — Add a Leave-In and Finish With Oil

A leave-in conditioner applied after every wash keeps the hair hydrated throughout the day — not just for the hour after washing. A small amount of oil on the ends seals moisture in and adds shine as a finishing step.

"These two products together — a leave-in and a finishing oil — make dry hair look and feel significantly better between wash days," says Charlene at Canal Walk. "Most clients who add these two steps see an immediate improvement in how long the softness lasts."

05 — Protect From Heat and the South African Sun

Heat protectant before every styling session is essential. Turn tools down — 150 to 180 degrees for fine dry hair, no higher than 200 for coarser hair. For the sun, a UV-protective leave-in or physical protection (a hat) on beach days makes a real difference in South Africa's climate.

"The sun here genuinely damages hair," says Royston at Cavendish. "UV breaks down the cuticle the same way it damages skin, and Cape Town's summer sun is particularly strong. We recommend UV-protective leave-ins year-round for clients with dry or colour-treated hair."

06 — When to See a Stylist

For hair that's very dry, damaged, or not improving with a better home routine, professional treatments go deeper. In-salon intensive moisturising and reconstructing treatments rebuild hair's moisture and strength in a single visit. Our stylists can also build a personalised home routine for your specific hair.

"If you've been consistent with a good routine for four to six weeks and still not seeing improvement, come in," says Lewis. "Sometimes the issue is damage or porosity that needs a professional treatment alongside home care. We can assess exactly what's happening and recommend the right plan."

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I fix dry hair fast?

A deep-conditioning mask plus a few drops of oil on the ends gives an immediate improvement in softness and shine. Lasting results come from a consistent routine over a few weeks.

Why is my hair so dry even though I condition it?

Conditioning alone isn't enough if you're over-washing, heat styling without protection, or dealing with damage or hard water that strips moisture faster than conditioner replenishes it. Address the cause alongside the symptom.

Is dry hair the same as damaged hair?

No. Dryness is a moisture problem. Damage is structural harm to the hair fibre. They often occur together — very dry hair is more vulnerable to damage — but the treatments are different.

How quickly can dry hair be fixed?

Most people notice improvement within two to three weeks of a consistent routine. Severely dry or damaged hair takes longer and may need in-salon treatment alongside home care.

Is my hard water making my hair dry?

Yes — mineral deposits from hard water build up on the hair and stop products penetrating properly. A chelating or clarifying shampoo used monthly removes buildup. Some clients also use shower filters to reduce mineral exposure.
