Curly Hair Care: The Complete Routine for Defined, Healthy Curls

Curly Hair Care: The Complete Routine for Defined, Healthy Curls

TL;DR:

  • Curly hair is naturally drier and more fragile than straight hair — it needs a moisture-focused routine and gentle handling
  • Apply all styling products to soaking-wet hair, scrunching upward — this is the rule that separates defined curls from frizz
  • Don't touch curls while they dry. Don't brush dry. These two habits cause most curly-hair frizz
  • Wash frequency: once or twice a week maximum — more strips the oils curly hair can't afford to lose
  • A curl-specialist cut makes more difference than most products — the shape of the cut determines how well curls fall

Curly hair is gorgeous when it's looked after — and frustrating when it isn't. The difference is almost always routine and technique rather than products. Here's what our Cape Town curl specialists recommend for building a routine that actually works — whatever your curl type.

Meet the experts:
Royston and Warren at Cavendish Square — Judy, head trainer — Lewis, owner — Jackie at Gardens Centre — Debbie and Nikí at V&A Waterfront — Danny and Charlene at Canal Walk — Lynette, Samantha and Dominique at Constantia Village

01 — Why Curly Hair Is Different

The curlier the hair, the harder it is for scalp oil to travel down the twisting strand — so curly hair is almost always on the drier side. The same bends that create curl also make hair more fragile and more prone to frizz, because the cuticle sits more openly. The result: curls thrive on moisture and gentle handling, and suffer under harsh products and rough treatment.

"Understanding why curly hair behaves the way it does makes every other decision easier," says Lewis. "It's not difficult or high-maintenance — it just needs different products and different technique. Once clients understand that curly hair is structurally drier and more fragile, the reason for the gentle routine makes sense."

02 — Know Your Curl Type

Curls range from loose waves through to tight coils, and most people fall somewhere on that spectrum. You don't need to obsess over the exact number category, but knowing roughly where you sit helps: looser waves need lighter products so they aren't weighed down, while tighter curls and coils need the richest moisture and most intensive definition.

"The type conversation is really about weight," says Royston at Cavendish. "Heavy products on fine wavy hair flatten it. Light products on coily hair aren't enough. The principle is the same for every curl type — moisture and definition — but the density and richness of products changes based on the texture."

03 — The Curly Hair Routine: Cleanse Gently, Condition Generously

Use a sulphate-free or gentle shampoo and don't over-wash — once or twice a week is enough for most curl types. Stripping curls makes dryness and frizz worse and is one of the most common mistakes we see. Apply conditioner generously through the lengths and detangle gently with fingers or a wide-tooth comb while it's in. Never brush dry curls — it shatters the curl pattern into frizz.

04 — The Golden Rule: Apply Stylers to Soaking-Wet Hair

This is the step that changes everything. Apply leave-in, curl cream and gel while hair is dripping wet — immediately out of the shower. This seals moisture into the strand and forms the curl pattern as it dries. Scrunch upward to encourage the curl. Applied to hair that's too dry, products sit on top rather than working into the curl structure and create frizz instead of definition.

"This is the change I see transform most clients' curls," says Debbie at the Waterfront. "Same products, same routine — just applied while the hair is completely wet rather than towel-dried. The difference in definition is dramatic. Wet application is not optional; it's the technique."

05 — Dry Without Disrupting

Once products are applied, the goal is to let curls form without interference. Either air-dry completely, or use a diffuser on low heat to cup and lift curls without blowing them apart. Don't touch curls while they dry — wait until fully dry, then scrunch out any gel cast for soft curls. Friction while drying — from towels, hands, or air from a dryer without a diffuser — is a major source of frizz.

"Microfibre towel or soft T-shirt to squeeze out water, then hands off," says Samantha at Constantia. "Most frizz in curly hair happens during drying from touching the hair before the curl is set. The patience required during drying pays off in the definition when it's done."

06 — Get a Curl-Specialist Cut

A curl-specialist cut — often done curl by curl or on dry hair — makes more difference to how curls fall and behave than most products. The right shape determines the weight distribution and removes sections that are dragging curls down. If your curls are landing inconsistently or lacking shape, a specialist cut is almost always the missing piece. Our stylists offer curl consultations at all eight Cape Town salon locations.

Frequently Asked Questions

How often should I wash curly hair?

Once or twice a week for most curl types. Curls dry out easily and frequent washing does more harm than good. Co-washing (conditioner-only) on non-shampoo days helps extend the routine without stripping.

Why is my curly hair so frizzy?

Usually a combination of dryness and disruption — not enough moisture, products applied to too-dry hair, or touching curls while they dry. Apply stylers to soaking-wet hair and leave them completely undisturbed until dry.

What products do I need for curly hair?

A gentle sulphate-free shampoo, rich conditioner, leave-in applied to wet hair, and a curl cream or gel. A weekly mask keeps curls hydrated and springy. See our best curly hair products guide for specific recommendations.

Should I brush my curly hair?

Only when wet and full of conditioner, with fingers or a wide-tooth comb. Brushing dry curls breaks up the pattern and creates frizz.
