Scalp build-up is the accumulation of dead skin cells, sebum (natural oil), styling product residue, mineral deposits from hard water, and chlorine from swimming on the scalp and hair shaft. Build-up causes dullness, weighed-down hair, slowed hair growth, itching, white flakes (often mistaken for dandruff), and poor product absorption — your shampoo and conditioner can't reach the hair properly through a layer of residue. Most people benefit from a clarifying shampoo or scalp-detox treatment once or twice a month, more often for those who use heavy styling products, live in hard-water areas, or swim regularly.

1. Clarifying wash — once or twice a month, replace your normal shampoo with a clarifying shampoo. Lather and leave on the scalp for 2-3 minutes before rinsing.
2. Scalp massage — during the clarifying wash, massage the scalp with fingertips for 1-2 minutes to lift loosened build-up.
3. Double-cleanse if needed — for heavy build-up (after swimming, dry shampoo overuse, or weeks between proper washes), a second clarifying lather is more effective than a single longer wash.
4. Deep condition immediately after — clarifying shampoos can be drying. Apply a moisturising hair mask to mid-lengths and ends for 5-10 minutes before rinsing.
5. Resume normal routine — go back to your usual sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner for daily care.

Clarifying shampoos are concentrated deep-cleansers designed for occasional use — typically once or twice a month. Daily shampoos use gentler surfactants to clean without stripping. Is scalp build-up the same as dandruff? No — though they can look similar. Build-up consists of product, oil, and dead skin cell accumulation, removable by a clarifying wash. Can clarifying shampoo damage colour-treated hair? Yes — most clarifying shampoos strip artificial colour molecules along with build-up. Use colour-safe clarifying options (Olaplex No.4C, Pureology Vinegar Hair Rinse) or wait until just before your next colour service if you must clarify colour-treated hair.

Why does my hair feel waxy? Waxy or coated-feeling hair is a classic build-up symptom — usually from silicone-heavy conditioners, leave-ins, or styling products. A clarifying wash should reset it. If it persists, try a sulfate-free clarifying shampoo and switch to silicone-free daily products.
