Hair Loss Shampoo

A hair loss shampoo does three things a normal shampoo doesn't: it clears the scalp of the sebum and residue that can smother follicles, it strengthens the strand so less hair is lost to breakage, and it adds body so existing hair looks fuller. What it cannot do on its own is restart follicles that have stopped producing hair. For hereditary or hormonal thinning, shampoo is the daily foundation; a clinically proven treatment such as minoxidil does the heavy lifting.

Nioxin — the salon standard for thinning hair. Systems 1 to 6 are matched to your hair type (natural, coloured or chemically treated) and how far thinning has progressed. Does hair loss shampoo actually work?

It works for what it is designed to do: reduce breakage, keep the scalp clear and make hair look thicker. Independent evidence that shampoo alone regrows hair is weak, which is why we recommend pairing it with a proven treatment for hereditary thinning.

How long before I see a difference?

Hair feels stronger and fuller within a few weeks. Any change in shedding takes longer — most brands quote eight to twelve weeks of consistent use — because hair grows roughly a centimetre a month.

Which Nioxin system do I need?

Systems 1 and 2 are for natural hair, 3 and 4 for coloured hair, 5 and 6 for chemically treated hair; the odd numbers are for light thinning and the even numbers for progressed thinning. Ask a stylist if you are between two.

Can men and women use the same hair loss shampoo?
