If you've spent years fighting frizz, you've probably tried a keratin treatment — or been talked out of one because of the chemicals. QiQi is the treatment changing that conversation. Here's what it actually is, how it differs from keratin and Brazilian blowouts, and how to keep the results going at home.

What is QiQi?

QiQi is a professional smoothing and straightening system — but calling it a 'keratin treatment' sells it short, because technically it isn't one. There's no keratin and no collagen in it. Instead, QiQi's Vega system uses acid-based actives that soften the hair's internal disulfide bonds — then heat from a flat iron or smoothing brush reshapes the texture and sets it. It works with the hair's own structure rather than coating the surface, and it does it without alkaline chemicals.

That distinction matters for three reasons that anyone who's sat through a traditional keratin appointment will recognise immediately:

  • It's formaldehyde-free. No fumes, no stinging eyes, no smoke off the flat iron, no two-day window where you can't tie your hair back or wash it.
  • It's vegan and cruelty-free. No animal-derived keratin or collagen.
  • It's safe for colour-treated and bleached hair. The acidic formula sits at a pH that works with your colour chemistry instead of against it.

The result is the thing people actually want from a smoothing treatment — soft, sleek, frizz-free, manageable hair — without the trade-offs that made keratin a reluctant compromise for so many.

QiQi vs keratin vs a Brazilian blowout — what's the difference?

This is the question we get most, so here's the honest version.

Traditional keratin treatments coat the hair shaft with a keratin layer that's sealed in with heat. They smooth beautifully, but the classic formulas relied on formaldehyde (or formaldehyde-releasing ingredients) to lock everything in, and because the treatment sits on the hair, it gradually washes out.

Brazilian blowouts are a category of keratin-style smoothing — same surface-coating principle, same gradual fade, same chemical considerations depending on the formula.

QiQi works differently. Because it restructures the hair's actual bonds rather than coating them, the smoothness doesn't rinse away over a handful of washes — it lasts until new, untreated hair grows in, typically 3 to 4 months. And it does it without formaldehyde, which is the headline reason stylists and clients are moving across to it.

In short: keratin and Brazilian smooth the outside of the hair, temporarily. QiQi changes the structure of the hair, durably — and cleanly.

No three-day wait, no restrictions

This is where QiQi pulls furthest ahead of a classic keratin treatment. With keratin you typically can't wash, tie back or clip your hair for two to three days while it sets — a real inconvenience. QiQi has none of that:

  • Colour the same day — a colour service can be done the same day as the treatment.
  • Tie it up the same day — ponytails, braids and clips are fine straight away.
  • Wash or work out the same day — no waiting period before your first shampoo or gym session.
  • Swim freely — the sea or the pool won't compromise your results.
  • Humidity- and sweat-resistant — it holds its smooth finish through heat, humidity and exercise.

For Cape Town's coastal humidity and an on-the-go lifestyle, that freedom is the real-world difference.

Three formulations — because not all hair wants the same thing

One of the reasons QiQi gives such natural-looking results is that it isn't one-size-fits-all. The Vega system comes in three controllers, and the right one depends on your hair type and how much texture you want to keep:

  • Thick & Coarse — for curly and coily hair (think Type 3–4) that wants maximum straightening and day-to-day manageability. The most intensive restructuring of the three.
  • Wavy & Curly — for moderate texture (Type 2–3) that wants control and frizz-elimination while keeping some natural volume and movement. The 'tamed, not flattened' option.
  • Thin & Delicate — for fine hair that wants long-lasting smoothness and easier styling, with a gentler formula calibrated for delicate hair structures.

Choosing the right one is exactly what an in-salon consultation is for — which is why QiQi is a professional, salon-applied treatment rather than something you do at home.

How long does it last, and what should I expect?

Expect 3 to 4 months from a Vega treatment, depending on your hair type and how you care for it afterwards. Unlike surface treatments that fade unevenly, QiQi grows out gradually and predictably as new hair comes through — no harsh line of demarcation, no sudden return to frizz.

What changes day-to-day: dramatically less frizz, far shorter blow-drying time, and hair that holds a sleek finish even in humidity — which, in Cape Town's South-Easter and coastal damp, is the whole point.

Is QiQi safe for coloured or bleached hair?

Yes — and this is one of its genuine advantages. Because the Vega formula is acid-based and works at a colour-compatible pH, it's safe for colour-treated and bleached hair, where alkaline keratin treatments can interfere with your colour. With the right timing between services, QiQi can be done around your colour rather than instead of it. If your hair is heavily lightened or porous, the Porosity Play Spray (more on that below) is used to balance things out first.

Making it last: the QiQi aftercare range

A smoothing treatment is only as good as the care that follows it — and ordinary supermarket shampoo is the fastest way to undo a great result. Sulphates and salt strip the treatment; the QiQi homecare range is built specifically to protect it.

Here's what to use and why:

  • QiQi Smooth Service Shampoo (300ml) — sulphate-free and salt-free, so it cleanses without stripping the Vega treatment. This is the single most important product for making your results last.
  • QiQi Hydration Fixation Conditioner (300ml) — detangles, adds shine, and locks in smoothness after every wash.
  • QiQi Super Soaker Smoothing Masque (250ml / 350g) — a weekly deep-conditioning treatment that replenishes moisture and keeps treated hair strong and glossy.
  • QiQi Porosity Play Spray (250ml) — applied before shampooing to balance the hair's porosity, especially useful for colour-treated or bleached hair with uneven porosity.
  • QiQi SelfCtrl All Out Blowout Cream (180g) — a heat-protective styling cream for smooth, fast blow-dries between washes.

'The treatment does the heavy lifting, but the aftercare is what gets you the full three or four months. The two products I won't let a client leave without are the Smooth Service Shampoo and the masque — sulphate shampoo on QiQi hair is the one mistake that shortens everything.'— Nikki, Senior Stylist, Partners Hair V&A Waterfront

Frequently asked questions

Is QiQi a keratin treatment? No. It contains no keratin or collagen. It's an acid-based smoothing system that restructures the hair's disulfide bonds, achieving keratin-like smoothness without the keratin — or the formaldehyde.

Does QiQi contain formaldehyde? No. It's formaldehyde-free, which means no fumes during application and none of the post-treatment restrictions associated with traditional keratin.

How long does QiQi last?Typically 3–4 months, growing out gradually as new hair comes through.

Can I get QiQi if my hair is coloured or bleached?Yes. The acid-based, colour-compatible formula is safe for colour-treated and bleached hair when timed correctly around your colour services.

Will QiQi make my curls completely straight? It depends on the formulation. Thick & Coarse delivers maximum straightening, while Wavy & Curly is designed to control frizz and add manageability while keeping some natural movement. Your stylist will match the controller to the result you want.

What can't I use on QiQi-treated hair?Avoid sulphate and salt-based shampoos — they strip the treatment. Use the QiQi Smooth Service Shampoo or another sulphate-free formula to protect your results.
