TL;DR:

  • Hair loss is common and most types are addressable — early identification and action give the best outcomes
  • Get a blood test first: ferritin, full blood count, thyroid, vitamin D, zinc before buying any products
  • The three most common types in South Africa: androgenetic alopecia (genetic), telogen effluvium (stress/nutrition), and iron deficiency hair loss
  • Products support hair health but can't override an unaddressed medical cause
  • A scalp consultation at Partners Hair is a practical, low-barrier first step

Hair loss can feel isolating and confusing. It rarely announces itself clearly — it starts gradually, makes you question whether you're imagining it, and then one day it's undeniable. The good news is that the vast majority of hair loss types are addressable, especially when caught early. The Partners Hair team across our Cape Town salons works regularly with clients navigating this. Here's how we approach it.

01 — Identify the Type First

The most important step is identifying what type of hair loss you're dealing with. The cause determines the solution. Treating genetic hair loss with the same approach as iron deficiency hair loss won't work. Treating alopecia areata with a scalp serum doesn't address the autoimmune mechanism driving it.

The most common types seen across our Cape Town salons: gradual thinning at the crown or widening part (usually androgenetic alopecia) — sudden diffuse shedding 2 to 3 months after a stressful event (usually telogen effluvium) — diffuse shedding with fatigue or other symptoms (often iron deficiency or thyroid) — smooth round bald patches (alopecia areata, needs medical attention).

"The first question I ask a client who comes to me about hair loss is what the pattern looks like," says Judy, head trainer. "Is it all over? Is it patchy? Is it at the crown? Is it coming in clumps or as individual strands with a bulb at the root? The pattern tells you almost everything about where to start."

02 — Get Blood Tests Before Products

Before investing in hair loss products, see your GP for a blood test. The most relevant markers: ferritin (stored iron, the most commonly missed), full blood count, thyroid function (TSH, Free T3, Free T4), vitamin D, and zinc. You cannot tell from symptoms alone whether your ferritin is low enough to cause hair loss. The blood test removes the guesswork.

03 — Causes: What We See in Cape Town

Iron deficiency is the most common nutritional cause in women — and it's consistently underdiagnosed. Many GP tests check iron but not ferritin, and ferritin levels within the "normal" lab range can still be too low for healthy hair growth. Telogen effluvium (stress-related shedding) increased significantly after 2020 — it typically resolves once the trigger is removed, but that can take six to twelve months. Androgenetic alopecia is the most common overall cause across all ages and genders. Nutritional deficiencies, thyroid dysfunction, and hormonal changes (postpartum, contraceptive changes, menopause) are also common triggers we see across our client base.

04 — What Products Can and Can't Do

A hair growth serum, scalp-supportive shampoo, and targeted serum can significantly support a hair loss routine — but only when the underlying cause is being addressed simultaneously. Products can improve the scalp environment, stimulate follicle activity, and reduce breakage. They can't override ongoing iron deficiency, an uncontrolled thyroid condition, or the autoimmune mechanism driving alopecia areata.

"We're honest with clients about this," says Lewis. "The products help. They help a lot, in some cases. But if the iron is still low, the products are fighting uphill. Address the cause. Then the products can do their job properly."

05 — Prevention: The Habits That Support Hair Health

Adequate protein in your diet. Regular iron, thyroid, and vitamin D checks — particularly for women of reproductive age. Avoiding tight hairstyles that cause traction on the hairline. Gentle handling of wet hair. Reducing heat frequency and always using heat protection. Keeping the scalp clean and free of product buildup. None of these guarantee prevention of genetic or autoimmune hair loss — but they reduce the added burden on follicles that are already vulnerable.

06 — When to See a Professional

See your GP if you have significant, sudden, or prolonged shedding with other symptoms. See a trichologist if you've been shedding for more than three months without a clear cause. Visit Partners Hair for a scalp consultation if you want an assessment of what you're experiencing and a product recommendation matched to your situation. We refer to trichologists and GPs when that's what the situation calls for.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is hair loss common in South Africa?

Yes — androgenetic alopecia (genetic hair loss), iron deficiency hair loss, and stress-related telogen effluvium are all common. South Africa's hard water and strong UV also create additional scalp and hair stressors that can compound other causes.

What should I do first if I notice hair loss?

Book a GP appointment for blood tests (ferritin, full blood count, thyroid, vitamin D, zinc). Then book a scalp consultation at a salon to assess the pattern and get product guidance while you await results.

Can hair loss be reversed?

Most types of early-stage hair loss can be significantly improved or stabilised. Telogen effluvium typically reverses once the trigger is resolved. Iron deficiency hair loss recovers as levels improve. Androgenetic alopecia requires ongoing management rather than a cure. Early intervention gives the best outcomes in all cases.
