Sulphate-Free Shampoo: What It Is and Why It Matters

Sulphate-Free Shampoo: What It Is and Why It Matters

TL;DR:

  • Sulphate-free shampoo cleans more gently — it doesn't strip the natural oils and colour pigment that harsh sulphate formulas remove
  • It matters most for colour-treated, dry, damaged, curly and sensitive scalp hair
  • It's not automatically better for everyone — oily hair or heavy buildup sometimes needs a sulphate formula or monthly clarifying wash
  • Lather doesn't equal cleanliness — sulphate-free shampoos foam less but clean just as effectively
  • Most professional colour, dry and curl ranges we stock are sulphate-free by design

"Sulphate-free" is on more and more shampoo bottles — but what does it actually mean, and does it matter for your hair? Here's what our Cape Town stylists explain to clients every day, and how to know whether you need to make the switch.

01 — What Sulphates Actually Do

Sulphates (sodium lauryl sulphate and sodium laureth sulphate) are detergents that make shampoo foam and strip away oil and dirt. They're effective cleansers — sometimes too effective. For some hair types, that deep-stripping clean removes more natural oil, colour pigment, and moisture than you want.

"Sulphates were standard in professional shampoos for decades," says Lewis. "They get the hair clean. The problem is they don't distinguish between dirt and the oils and colour that the hair actually needs. For some clients, that's fine. For others — particularly those with colour-treated or very dry hair — sulphate-free is significantly better."

02 — Who Needs Sulphate-Free

Sulphate-free shampoo matters most for colour-treated hair — sulphates strip colour pigment faster, making expensive colour fade in weeks rather than months. For dry or damaged hair, gentler cleansing preserves the oils and moisture that dry hair badly needs. Curly and coily hair is naturally dry and thrives on low-strip cleansing. Sensitive or dry scalps benefit from the reduced irritation a gentler formula provides.

"The first thing I tell any colour client is to switch to sulphate-free," says Royston at Cavendish. "It's the single most impactful change for making colour last longer at home. Sulphate shampoos don't just wash out dirt — they wash out the colour with every wash."

03 — Who Doesn't Need Sulphate-Free

If your hair is uncoloured, oily, or gets a lot of product buildup, a sulphate shampoo — or the occasional clarifying wash — can actually suit you better. It cuts through oil and buildup more thoroughly. Sulphate-free isn't automatically better for everyone; it's better for hair that needs gentle, protective cleansing.

"Clients with oily hair who switch to sulphate-free sometimes come back saying their hair feels heavier and greasier," says Charlene at Canal Walk. "That can happen when the scalp needs a more thorough cleanse. Sulphate-free isn't the universal answer — it's the answer for specific hair types."

04 — The Lather Myth

Sulphate-free shampoos foam less — that's normal and not a sign they aren't working. Lather isn't cleaning power. The foam in a sulphate shampoo is the sulphates themselves, not evidence of effectiveness. You may need a slightly larger amount and a bit more massaging to cleanse the scalp well, but the cleaning is happening regardless of the foam level.

"Almost every client who switches to sulphate-free says the same thing for the first week: 'I don't feel like it's really cleaning,'" says Debbie at the Waterfront. "By week two they've noticed softer hair and longer-lasting colour and they don't miss the foam. The expectation of lather is conditioning from years of sulphate shampoos."

05 — Sulphate-Free in South Africa's Climate

Cape Town's hard water, strong UV, and outdoor lifestyle mean colour and moisture are both under pressure year-round. A sulphate-free shampoo reduces one significant source of stripping — which is more impactful here than in softer-water, lower-UV environments. Pair with a monthly chelating wash to remove mineral buildup without going back to a harsh sulphate formula regularly.

06 — Making the Switch

Most people notice softer, less-stripped hair and longer-lasting colour within two weeks of switching to sulphate-free. The transition is usually immediate — there's no adjustment period in terms of hair health, just the adjustment in lather expectation. If you have very heavy buildup from years of silicone-based products, a one-off clarifying shampoo before the switch helps the sulphate-free formula work more effectively from day one.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is sulphate-free shampoo better?

Better for colour-treated, dry, damaged, curly hair and sensitive scalps. For oily or buildup-prone hair, a regular or clarifying shampoo may suit better. The right choice depends on your hair type.

Does sulphate-free shampoo clean as well?

Yes — it cleans effectively, just more gently and with less foam. Lather isn't a measure of cleanliness.

Will sulphate-free shampoo stop my colour fading?

It significantly slows fade compared with sulphate shampoos, which is why colourists recommend it for coloured hair. It's not the only factor — UV protection, washing frequency, and water temperature all matter too.

Can I use sulphate-free every day?

Yes, though most hair does best washed two to three times a week regardless of shampoo type.

Which professional brands make good sulphate-free shampoos?

Most of the professional colour, dry and curl ranges we stock are sulphate-free. Kérastase Nutritive, Redken All Soft, Pureology Hydrate, and Moroccanoil Hydrating are all sulphate-free. Browse our ranges or ask our stylists for a recommendation matched to your hair type.
