How to Care for Dry Colour-Treated Hair

TL;DR:

  • Colour-treated hair becomes more porous, which means it loses moisture faster — your routine needs to compensate for this
  • Sulphate-free, colour-safe shampoo is the foundation — it protects the tone and the moisture at the same time
  • A weekly mask is the most impactful upgrade for dry colour-treated hair
  • Dry and damaged are different — if your hair feels weak or snapping, you need repair alongside moisture
  • Heat protection is especially important for colour-treated hair, which is already more vulnerable to styling stress

You walk out of the salon with colour that looks incredible — glossy, vibrant, fresh. But within a few weeks it starts to feel dry, dull, and harder to manage. That's not a bad colour result. That's what happens when colour-treated hair doesn't get the right care at home.

Here's exactly what our colourists recommend — and why.

01 — Switch to a Colour-Safe Sulphate-Free Shampoo

The colouring process makes hair more porous — which means it absorbs and loses moisture more easily. A harsh sulphate shampoo strips what little moisture is left, and takes colour with it. A colour-safe, sulphate-free shampoo does both jobs: gentle cleansing and colour protection.

"This is the very first thing I tell every colour client before they leave the chair," says Warren at Cavendish. "If you go home and wash with a supermarket shampoo, you're undoing the colour service within days. The shampoo matters more than anything else."

02 — Condition Every Wash, Mask Every Week

Conditioner after every wash is non-negotiable for dry colour-treated hair. Apply it through the mid-lengths and ends — where colour-treated hair is driest — and leave it for two to three minutes. Not just while you rinse everything else. Actually leave it.

"A weekly mask is where you'll see the biggest difference," says Royston at Cavendish. "Conditioner maintains the hair. A mask repairs and nourishes. Colour-treated hair needs both."

Choose your mask based on what your hair needs most: a hydrating mask for dryness, a repair mask if the hair feels brittle or weak, a smoothing mask if frizz is the main issue. Kérastase Chroma Absolu Masque and Pureology Hydrate Superfoods Treatment are both excellent for dry colour-treated hair.

03 — Add a Leave-In After Every Wash

A leave-in conditioner stays on the hair after washing and keeps it soft, manageable and protected throughout the day. It's especially useful for colour-treated hair because it helps maintain the moisture from your mask between washes.

"If your hair feels dry again by the afternoon, a leave-in is the step you're missing," says Charlene at Canal Walk. "It bridges the gap between wash days and protects the hair from environmental stress. Fine colour-treated hair should use a spray. Thicker hair can handle a cream or milk."

04 — Use Heat Protection Every Single Time

Colour-treated hair is more porous — which makes it more vulnerable to heat damage than natural hair. Hot tools open the cuticle and let moisture escape, accelerating the dryness and dullness you're trying to prevent.

"Blow-drying colour-treated hair without protection is one of the most damaging things you can do to it," says Debbie at the Waterfront. "Apply heat protectant to damp hair before every session. Turn your tools down — 150 to 180 degrees is plenty. You don't need maximum heat."

05 — Know When You Need Repair, Not Just Moisture

Dry colour-treated hair and damaged colour-treated hair are not the same thing. If your hair feels dry but still has reasonable strength and elasticity, moisture and colour care is what you need. If it feels weak, stretchy when wet, or is snapping at the ends, you need repair alongside hydration.

"Bond damage from bleach or frequent colour can't be fixed with moisture alone," says Lewis. "That's when we bring in something like K18 or Redken Acidic Bonding Concentrate. These products work at the structural level — moisture products work at the surface. Both matter, but they're different."

06 — Wash Less, and Finish With Oil on the Ends

Every wash is an opportunity for colour and moisture to escape. Two to three times a week is the right frequency for most colour-treated hair. On off days, dry shampoo at the roots keeps hair fresh without water exposure.

"A small amount of oil or serum on the ends makes a big difference to how colour-treated hair looks and feels," says Samantha at Constantia. "Not all over — just the mid-lengths and ends where the hair is driest. It adds shine and polish, and it stops the ends from looking frizzy or dull between washes." Moroccanoil Treatment, Kérastase Elixir Ultime and Pureology Colour Fanatic are all excellent finishing options.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my hair dry after colouring?

Colouring makes hair more porous, especially after lightening or bleach. More porous hair loses moisture more easily — which is why colour-treated hair feels drier than natural hair and needs a more targeted routine.

What is the best shampoo for dry colour-treated hair?

Pureology Hydrate, Kérastase Chroma Absolu, and L'Oréal Professionnel Vitamino Color are all strong options — sulphate-free, colour-safe, and genuinely moisturising.

Should I use a mask on colour-treated hair?

Yes — every week. A mask gives colour-treated hair the deeper conditioning it needs that regular conditioner can't provide. Use it in place of conditioner once a week and leave it on for at least five minutes.

Is dry colour-treated hair the same as damaged hair?

Not necessarily. Colour-treated hair can be dry without being severely damaged. If your hair feels weak, stretchy when wet, or is snapping, that's damage — and you need a repair treatment alongside moisture care.

How often should I wash dry colour-treated hair?

Two to three times a week is the sweet spot for most colour-treated hair. More frequent washing strips colour and moisture. Use dry shampoo between washes to keep roots fresh.

Can I use oil on colour-treated hair?

Yes. A small amount of oil or serum on the mid-lengths and ends smooths the cuticle, adds shine, and reduces frizz. Keep it away from the roots.
